Research Articles on One to One Computing

Both my term papers for fall 2004 graduate courses focused on one-to-one computing initiatives.

To say I am relieved that the fall 2004 academic term is over would be to vastly understate my current sentiments. PRAISE THE LORD, the semester is over! I hope to chalk the past semester up as the worst– work and stress wise, of my graduate academic career.

I still did enjoy my studies the past few months, however, and am glad to have been able to focus on the likely topic of my future dissertation– one to one computing initiatives, in the term papers I wrote for both my fall courses. These papers are both available online:

Conditional Support of One to One Technology Immersion from a Critical Educational Theorist’s Perspective (PDF): I wrote this as a research paper for my EDCI 6306 class, a C&I Seminar on the thought and writings of Brazilian educator Paulo Freire. The paper takes a look at research on the impact of educational technology upon instructional teaching practices, and examines the impacts (reported so far in research studies) of one to one technology initiatives.

My second term paper this semester was Assessing The Impact Of One To One Technology Immersion On Student Attendance: Chasing Shadows Or The Panacea For Educational Reform? (PDF) I wrote this as a mini-dissertation (following the same format and sections) for my EPSY 6301 Advanced Data Analysis course. We had to analyze a “real” data set using some of the methods and processes of quantitative analysis covered in the course.

I am not sure if I will be able to formally publish either piece in refereed journals, but even if I am not it was still very worthwhile to conduct the research for these projects. I think a large amount of the work I did on these writing projects will be helpful for my dissertation lit review.
