Class project using a Wiki

posted in literacy |
I am having to do a group project for my
Educational Law class this term, with 4 students who do not live in Lubbock and
attend our class each week via iTV. We are going to try using a Wiki as a
collaborative tool.

Our wiki (which I just started this
evening/morning) is located on target="NewWindow">http://edlaw.jot.com/. This website (JotSpot) is
presently providing free wikis during a beta period, which I hope either lasts
for the next 4 weeks as we get our project resources together, or will continue
to be free for us since we are doing this for a
class.

I think wikis have GREAT
promise for educational projects and group collaboration. Check out JotSpot at
www.jot.com. To
use a wiki, I have been thinking I would have to href="http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?WikiEngines" target="NewWindow">download
sourcecode and get the software installed and configured on one of our
college servers. JotSpot’s service makes that process unnecessary, and at least
for now, it is free. What a
deal!

Anyone can read what our group
members post to the wiki and the blog I created to go along with it, but only
group members (who have individual userids and passwords I setup tonight and
emailed them) can actually change the content. Lots of variations on this are
possible, we could even leave this open for anyone to post content. But for now,
this looks like the best setup for our educational group
purpose.

And after the class,
theoretically the resources we create in this wiki can remain visible to others
online. How cool.

Thanks to Dr Nancy
Maushak during her href="http://www.wesfryer.com/blog/B106757942/C192863536/E848690846/index.html"
target="NewWindow">TxDLA 2005 presentation for giving me this idea!
And thanks to Lawrence Lessig in his href="http://www.lessig.org/blog/archives/002782.shtml"
target="NewWindow">blog post from 17 March 2005 about the wiki he
has created for the next version of his Code book, which alerted me to the
JotSpot wiki service!

Are blogs cool
or what?! And now I shall have an opportunity to dabble with a wiki…. what is
going to be next as far as web-based, collaborative communication goes? The sky
is the limit. :-)

On this day..
