Eric Von Hippel’s new book “Democratizing Innovation” is on the cutting edge of creativity and IP for several reasons.  p> I have not read it yet, but I ran across Eric Von Hippel’s new book “Democratizing Innovation” today. More thoughts on “Redesigning Obsolete High Schools”

A continuing dialog relating to school reform, inspired and enabled by blog postings.  Earlier this month I posted a blog entry entitled “Yes we need supportive families, but we need school reform too,” which was a response to a thoughtful article written by Thom Powell in Oregon concerning school reform– posted on Ian Jukes’ weblog.

Free eBook: “Practicing the Presence of God” by Brother Lawrence

Hmmm. Are the best things in life free?  In Day 11 of Rick Warren’s “The Purpose Driven Life,” he mentions a 450 year old text by a cook in a French monastery. This book, “Practicing the Presence of God” by Brother Lawrence, is available for a reasonable price at Amazon.com, but I thought that– at

Make no mistake: Christianity is not equivalent to Islam

These thoughts are a response to a forwarded email concerning Islam, copied from this page on the Masjid Annur website. The main point here is not to discount the important need to respect people with other faiths, and accord them the equal protection they deserve and are due under the laws of our nation and

Do Windows users like this one deserve suffering on in ignorance?

Published by in apple on April 15th, 2005

This article in this week’s K-State collegian reveal some common misconceptions about Windows-alternative operating systems and those who use them.  I think Bill Wall, writing the article “Apple a waste of marketshare; PCs offer more useful experience,” surely must have written this piece as a wry attempt to get some Mac users he knows up

iPod Shuffle: I am in love!!!!

Published by in apple on April 14th, 2005

Oh my gosh. Can technology get any cooler than this?!  I bought a new iPod Shuffle today, charged it this afternoon and evening when I was teaching class, plugged it in to the computer to sync it up with iTunes tonight, and have just started to experience musical nirvana. My old 5 GB (original) iPod

So now I’m reading blog postings written in Arabic?!

Published by in blogs on April 13th, 2005

Free translation websites make the impossible now possible.  Thanks to the Arabic to English translation website http://english.sakhr.com/ and a login ID from www.bugmenot.com, I read some posts tonight IN ARABIC from an Iraqi writing about, among other things, the rebuilding of schools in Iraq. Omar posted this message today that includes a multitude of links

Music video “Satisfy” – Check it out!

One of the adult leaders in our church’s youth group and youth members have written and created an original song and music video well worth seeing!  My friend and fellow church member at WPC Paul Landers sent me a link this evening to a musical song he wrote and produced using GarageBand, and a music

Learning in depth, authentic critical inquiry, rejecting high stakes testing: Urban is doing it right!

Take 7 minutes and view this video, then read the article if you have some extra time. These kids and teachers say what I would like to express much more powerfully and persuasively than I can with text in this blog.  What do you think of high stakes testing? You need to have an opinion,

Fun with Google Maps

Have you spent time lately playing with Google Maps, now that they have added satellite imagery? This resource is a geographers dream! What fun!  I have been reading about many bloggers who have been spending time on the Google Maps website, since last week they added a mind-blowing new feature: the ability to toggle between

Sad to see the textbook lobby resort to personal attacks in the HB4 discussion

What is the response of textbook lobby representatives to HB4, which is forward looking and seeks to transform in fundamental ways the manner in which education is offered and experienced in the state of Texas? Sadly, to engage in personal attacks.  In my philosophy 101 class in college, I remember learning that in ideological debate–

Yes we need supportive families, but we need school reform too

Some thoughts on Thom Powell’s points relating to school reform and Bill Gates’ call to revamp high schools.  Ian Jukes has a posting on his blog this week responding to the comments Bill Gates made at the National Education Summit on High Schools in February. I agree with the basic point of Thom Powell’s article:

EdTech: Tool for Empowerment, Vocational Opportunities, Social Change

Some thoughts on the recently released 45 minute short film, Local Voices, Global Visions.  Educational technology has potential to serve as a transformational change agent. That is the underlying assumption behind our statewide Technology Immersion Pilot (TIP) project, and has been an evolving article of faith in my own pedagogic creed since I started teaching
