Elgg: an integrated open-source CMS / LMS
posted in blogs, edtech |Elgg (http://elgg.net) is a cool, open-source content management system (CMS) / learning management system (LMS) environment that offers an integration of many read/write web technologies. These include blogs, social boorkmarks, and wikis. The main limitation I see is that this community would be limited by those using Elgg– the community using del.icio.us for example, is much larger and therefore of more practical value. Scale of use is key ingredient in determining value of social technologies like this I think. So if Elgg usership grows, so will its social utility.
Cool that it is integrated tho– sort of like MS Office integration, but for read/write web technologies. This has been a sound software concept in the past and logically it should still serve now. Rather than setup multiple accounts on different servers for different functionalities, with Elgg users can access multiple tools through a single interface. I see great potential for using this in a class with students, for all work completed in a particular semester.
Great that signup and hosting is free, for a custom URL and a gigabyte of storage!
