Great free screen recording software, Digital newspapers

posted in edtech |

I recently had an opportunity to use a SMART Board interactive whiteboard, and must say that it is one of the most amazing pieces of instructional technology hardware I have ever seen or used. Wow! I am really looking forward to using this as an instructional tool in the coming year.

I was amazed and thrilled to also find, during the process of setting up my computer to utilize the Smartboard, that the free Smartboard software (available for Mac, UNIX and Windows) can apparently be used for screen capture without the Smartboard hardware. This includes static screen captures of desktop images as well as movies of your computer screen, along with accompanying audio narration. On the Windows side of things, I have used Camtasia Studio as a screen recorder, but commercially that software is $300. And it is Windows-only. By contrast, Smartboard software is cross-platform and free. Very nice.

I have created a short example tutorial about using the free web-based Bloglines feed aggregator as a “digital newspaper” using Smartboard software. This video tutorial is available in both a low bandwidth cell phone compatible version and a high bandwidth version. Link to:

- Cell phone version - 3G format (5.5 MB)
- High bandwidth version - QuickTime format (12.9 MB)

Playtime is 9 min, 55 sec. This was exported using the amazing H.264 video codec, and requires installation of free QuickTime 7 player software. For Windows users, QuickTime 7 is available as a free public preview. You may need to restart before the video will play properly.

On this day..
