I listened to the NPR technology podcast this past Friday, and was surprised to learn that eBay has bought the company Skype. According to the NPR news piece, eBay is hoping the purchase will help facilitate large purchases, especially those made internationally.
Skype is amazingly great and free technology. Let’s hope it stays that way after the eBay purchase. Apparently only about 10% of Skype users are in the US. It is amazing to see how fast technology changes, and how hard it is to keep up.
Ask a random sampling of your acquaintances what the following are: Skype, podcasting, RSS, wikis. I would bet you will get blank stares for many if not all of those terms. This doesn’t mean the person isn’t informed or intelligent, it is just a sign of the speed of change.
Our society is moving at the speed of creativity. I think I am too, but man… travel at these speeds is a dizzying affair… and I don’t think there is a stop sign or even a speed limit sign on the visible horizon.
Honestly, at times the speed of change and innovation makes me NEED a stop sign. I think that is why the more technological our society and even my own family becomes, the more we all relish the opportunity to go camping and escape almost all technologies completely. (We do bring flashlights and use camp stoves, however.) Our next camping trip will not come soon enough…..
My love of the outdoors and the solace it provides is actually the inspiration for the banner graphic I now use on my blog and personal website– it was a photo taken by my wife about 4 years ago when we were in Wyoming, of me fishing a couple hours from Cody, Wyoming. 🙂
