Kids talk about digital literacy

posted in literacy, podcasting |

Cheryl Oakes interviewed 3rd and 4th grade students in Wells, Maine recently about information literacy / digital literacy and posted the interview as a podcast on Bob Sprankle’s Bit by Bit podcast. Great to hear directly from students on these issues. These kids are posting their writing on their Room208 blog as well as publishing their work and thoughts via audio on the Room208 podcast. In these interviews, students address differences in research (comparing now to the past), global communication skills, podcast shoutouts, self-directed learning, and other issues related to their acquisition of digital literacy.

I think this forum was outstanding. Next time, or if someone else does this, it might good to also include parents in the interview to get their perspectives on “new versus old” literacies.

The kids specifically discussed “shoutouts” in the podcast interview. I was curious if Wikipedia had an entry for “shoutout” yet, and learned it did not. So I created it with a few links! Please help edit and develop this WikiPedia entry for “shoutout,” especially adding additional links to other classroom shoutout examples if you know of them.

On this day..

Awesome, Wes! The scholars will be thrilled to see that they are in Wikipedia (again). But even better— they will have the opportunity to go in and EDIT it, because I don’t think that they are in fact the first to use the term “shoutout”. Thank you for giving my students an authentic writing experience, in a 21st Century Literacy medium!
