Saddam Hussein and Lawless World
posted in history, military, podcasting, politics |Yahoo news has published an enlightening profile of Saddam Hussein that includes many facts I did not know about him and Iraqi history.
Whatever your position about the current US war in Iraq, I think any observer would have to admit that Saddam was and is quite a bad guy. At least anyone who believes that human rights are universal. I certainly put myself in that category.
Whether or not a military action rather than a police action has been the best policy choice to fight terrorism (especially in the Arab world) and bring criminals to justice is another question. I recently listened to the Washington College of Law Podcast from October 26, 2005 featuring Dr. Phillippe Sands discussing his book ““Lawless World: America and the Making and Breaking of Global Rules–From FDR’s Atlantic Charter to George W. Bush’s Illegal War”.
Whatever your political persuasion, I think these ideas are very important to consider as they relate to ongoing policy. Whatever someone’s opinion is about the war, I think if they are reasonable they will concede that it is a good thing Saddam is no longer the ruler of Iraq. Whether or not the way in which that outcome was achieved was in the best long term interests of the United States and the international community is up for debate. Toward that end, Sands’ ideas are worth hearing and considering, even if you are a political conservative and a Rush fan. ![]()
