TiVo is now supporting a feature on some units with certain service plans that allows users to transfer iPod video-friendly versions of recorded television programs to their iPod. Not surprisingly, this has some (maybe many) TV execs pretty mad. And probably worried, if not scared.
I agree with the ARSTechnica post that these developments are contentious, and are likely raising issues that won’t be resolved soon. Why aren’t any more TV programs available for $2 download on iTunes? I have no way of knowing why, but agree with speculation that the traditional entertainment industry is very divided on these issues.
Let’s face it folks: traditional media types want to sell advertising. That is basically their entire reason for existence at this point. Advertising is the foundation of the economic model on which most traditional content producers (especially TV) have based their empires. So clearly something which threatens that foundation is going to cause some waves.
This is going to be interesting to follow and watch in upcoming months. Hopefully, when it comes to watching videos about these developments, I’ll be doing so advertisement-free via MythTV. The better bet is that I’ll just be reading about it online.
