I have just spent a remarkable two hours, watching the movie Apollo 13 with astronaut Jim Lovell. Actually, I have watched it in my home (again) with the commentary turned on for Lovell and his wife. How amazing to hear all their thoughts, remembrances, and clarifications as I watched the movie yet another time. Very powerful and moving.
Turns out Jim currently lives in Horseshoe Bay, Texas. It would sure be great to meet him in person sometime. I love the movie Apollo 13 for many reasons, but principally for the scene where the scientists have to figure out how to get a square filter into a round hole. When my (at the time) 7 year old son saw that, he asked me if that was really true! And Lovell confirms in the commentaries that it was. Despite all our technology, we still need creative problem solvers who can literally think “out of the box.” Thank goodness we had such an awesome team of minds working together to bring home the Apollo 13 astronauts in 1970, about four months before I was born.
