The January 2005 BBC article “Boy brings encyclopaedia to book” points out that even commercial encyclopedias have mistakes, not just newcomer electronic resources like WikiPedia. Lucian George, a 12 year old living in London, has written to the editors Encyclopedia Britannica and pointed out several mistakes they made in the print edition his parents bought for their family for approximately $1,320 (US.)
Lucian’s attention to detail here is laudable. It also points out the need for our schools to increasingly use DIGITAL CURRICULUM rather than analog / print-based materials. I do not advocate doing away with school libraries by any means, but I do think the trend toward increased use of electronic/digital reference materials should be acknowledged as well as embraced by schools. Toward that end, we certainly need some changes in our education code here in Texas!
