I am about one-third of the way through the fantastic book “John Dewey and the Art of Teaching: Toward Reflective and Imaginative Practice” by Douglas J. Simpson, Michael J. B. Jackson, and Judy C. Aycock. I have taken 3 of my doctoral C&I classes from Dr. Simpson at Texas Tech, he is one of the best professors and educators I have ever had the privilege to study under and know.
This quotation resonates strongly with me in the context of web 2.0: why I blog, podcast, read the blogs of others and listen to their podcasts. The authors write on page 48:
Great artists detect when they are losing their enthusiasm by doing the same thing at the same time in the same way. They create alternative ways of enlivening their work and reaching their audiences. The wise teacher, therefore, cannot keep teaching the same way if she wants to stay emotionally and artistically alive.
I would paraphrase these sentences my observing that “educational artists self-renew.” I think self-renewal with a community of peers and reflective thinkers is what web 2.0 is all about.
