Afternoon with George Winston
posted in creativity, random |I had the delightful privilege yesterday afternoon to experience the wonderful music of George Winston at a benefit concert he gave for the Texas Tech School of Music. George played for over two hours in all, mostly piano solos but also some acoustic guitar and harmonica.
The first thing I was struck by is how important worldly experiences are in listening to instrumental music. George’s pieces “Rain” and “Woods” particularly caused me to visualize mountain and forest scenes I have been previously blessed to see, hike in and camp in firsthand. His musical connection to the seasons and the natural environment is extremely powerful. This connection is communicated memorably through his music.
I also loved the way George began each section of his concert describing the individuals who have influenced and inspired his work in a particular genre. It is clear that as a musician and a human being, George is continuing to grow, develop, discover and learn. He provided not only a wonderful afternoon of musical enjoyment for several hundred people, but he also provided an excellent model for each of us, who should be continuing to pursue our own journeys of growth, development, and joyful discovery along the paths of our own unique destiny.
