Popularity can have drawbacks and costs, especially when it comes to web 2.0 and bandwidth issues. Just tried to pull up the Learnerblogs.org page, and I was greeted with the following:
Hopefully they’ll get the problem resolved soon. I have been contemplating recommending to teachers that they look at Learnerblogs or Edublogs to setup classroom blogs, podcasts, and their own blogs. If bandwidth issues are a problem, it may be better for them to stick with commercially supported blog options like Blogger. The best scenario is for schools to run their own blog servers I think, but since we are talking about teachers innovating beyond the level of many school IT departments (at least presently) that may not be workable in the short term.
San Antonio ISD is one school district that is supporting blogging for any teachers who are interested. Miguel Guhlin is giving a presentation about it next week at TCEA 2006 in Austin, and already has a draft of his presentation online (5 Steps to District Blogs.) I predict Miguel will podcast the preso as well, this should be a great resource to point your district administrative types and IT folks to who want more info about how blogging can be supported across multiple campuses. Check out their online presentation (which uses the open source presentation solution S5) and navigate to page 10, where the classroom blog examples are linked. Great examples! 🙂
