Skull Island Game

posted in games, geography, web 2.0 |

Find Skull Island is a flash-based, online game requiring the use of Google Earth along with the website. The idea is cool, and the price is right, but the primary purpose of the website (sponsored by Universal) is to get users to buy the “King Kong DVD” when it is released on April 10th.

Still, despite the commercial nature of this, it is a cool website and an innovative linkage of a website to Google Earth. Unfortunately there does not appear to be a way to skip the intro/advertisement and jump right into the game.

After you watch the intro, you’ll download a KML file (Google Earth File) that you double click to go to that location. You start at the docks of New York. You then click the hyperlink from Google Earth to return to your web browser, and view another flash animation.

Make sure popups are allowed for the findskullisland.com website, because the flash animations are in popup windows. Unfortunately the Bronto Gorge KML file appeared to have some kind of problem, and did not render properly in my web browser. Also, I had to use Firefox instead of Safari for the javascript popups to work correctly.

Very powerful idea. For geography enabled web applications, this is just the beginning….

I have started a Google Earth social bookmarks list, where I’ve saved this link and other Google Earth related sites and resources.

Via the Google Earth Blog.
