Second Life and Darfur

posted in games, globalvoices |

According to their main website, Second Life is:

a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by over 200,000 people from around the globe… From the moment you enter the World you’ll discover a vast digital continent, teeming with people, entertainment, experiences and opportunity. Once you’ve explored a bit, perhaps you’ll find a perfect parcel of land to build your house or business.

Their motto is “Your World. Your Imagination.”

I was interested to learn about Second Life and an ongoing project to create “CampDarfur” from one of the people’s Flickr sites who commented on Andy Carvin’s Flickr site recently. Aren’t the ways these web 2.0 connections happening just amazing? Over the past several months, this project has morphed into CampDarfur.org: An awareness and action camp spotlighting today’s genocide.

In our current environment where we tend to hear most about NEGATIVE impacts of games and the virtual environment on young people in the mainstream press, it is important to know about projects like this which are seeking to promote awareness and activism with digital tools about issues that matter.

On this day..
