Garageband for Windows?

posted in creativity, podcasting |

I am having a blast today working with teachers in Bryan, Texas, creating short, simple podcasts with Garageband.

But what about folks who have Windows computers? I remember hearing about free software Sony had developed for Windows computers similar to Garageband– but I can’t find that link. Anyone know what that is?

M-Audio has developed a new software program called Session that is being touted by some as Garageband for Windows. I haven’t tried it yet, however.

On this day..

Fruity Loops is something that many people have used in my courses to get GB like functionality from their Windows boxes.

You’re probably thinking of Sony ACID (possibly the Express edition). It predates GarageBand; Apple even hired away one of its original creators. So it’s GarageBand that’s like ACID, not the other way around.

I use Acid Music Studio 6.0 and love it. It just doesn’t have the publish to podcast button like Garageband. I have started using Audacity more because it is free and I can always convince teachers to try podcasting much easier when they are not out any money. So I needed to get use to it again.

Great, thanks for the info. Man I love being able to ask questions in the edublogosphere! :-)

Sony ACID XPress (free) is the one I had heard of before. I’ll have to give it a try. I really like Audacity for creating audio-only podcasts too, even on a Mac with Garageband. Garageband does not support direct exporting to mp3, you have to use iTunes, and for some reason the exported Garageband/iTunes mp3 files always get corrupted for me when I use CCPublisher and upload to the Internet Archive– so I end up having to manually ftp the files. A pain! I never have that problem with the mp3 files I create with Audacity.

For the younger learners, Sony also has Super Dooper Music Looper that does loops with a very easy interface. You can record your own track in the program, but there is no way to import outside files (and trust me, I have tried all kinds of ways short of actual code editing).
