Virtual Field Trip workshop

I am presenting a short workshop tomorrow on virtual field trips for teachers in Greenville School, which is located in Marietta, Oklahoma about 100 miles south of Oklahoma City. I have created a Virtual Field Trip workshop wiki that includes resources we’ll explore and discuss.

As I was putting together this workshop curriculum, I realized that virtual field trips (VFTs) can probably be divided into two different categories:

  1. VFTs with Videoconferencing (synchronous, interactive)
  2. VFTs with a Web Browser (asynchronous, non-interactive)

I edited the Wikipedia entry for virtual field trip to reflect this– previously it just included the latter, online and non-interactive version. (Please add more to this WikiPedia definition if you have additional or different ideas!)

In this workshop we’ll be focusing on the interactive sort, and be using videoconferencing equipment at the school. I’ll also have my laptop, however, and if possible would like to demo videoconferencing with Skype or iChat. Our window for videoconferencing will be from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm US Central time tomorrow (Tues 8 August, 2006). If you are interested in videoconferencing with us during this time, please contact me this evening via email or during the actual workshop (my skype ID is wfryer). These teachers have not had much or any exposure to classroom videoconferencing before, so it will be fun to connect with several folks during the course of the workshop to not just THEORETICALLY discuss these videoconferencing possibilities, but actually EXPERIENCE some of them! :-)

On this day..
