Bubblr and Comic Creativity

posted in creativity, digitalstorytelling, intellectualproperty, web 2.0 |

I love the Macintosh application Comic Life, because it offers a powerful invitation to creativity with photos. This evening I discovered Bubblr, which offers a similar invitation but one that is web-based and Flickr-powered. Here is my first creation:

Nothing real earth shattering here, just a few ideas about television and marketing as we move closer to the Christmas shopping season. Irrespective of whether you agree with the views raised in this comic, you have to admit as a web 2.0 tool Bubblr is pretty cool!

The same folks that created Bubblr also offer PIM PAM PUM: Flickr real time TV (realtime images flashed inside a virtual TV screen). Given the apparent fact that ANY Flickr-posted image could show up in this photostream, this is NOT something I’d recommend showing students during whole-class instruction!

From an intellectual property perspective, mashups like this are quite interesting. Bubblr does not appear to pay attention to Creative Commons licensing. Since the images are dynamically merged via a Flash-based webpage, however, the images are not actually being copied for use anywhere. Clearly this is a powerful tool, and like any powerful tool this can (and likely is) being abused as well as utilized constructively.

Like BubbleShare, Bubblr users don’t need to login to use the tool and share the results with the world. Once you’ve “published” your work, it isn’t clear if there is a way to edit or delete your work, so publish carefully!
