Podcast128: Securing School Wireless Networks and Creating Cultures of Accountability for Online Behavior

This podcast features an interview from TCEA 2007 with John Jones of Bluesocket, a company (previously part of Cisco) specializing in network devices that permit administrators to secure wireless access and protect network resources in robust ways through the assignment of custom roles based on user profiles in existing LDAP or Active Directory databases. Additionally, Bluesocket’s controllers permit logging by userid and machine MAC address so that lists of visited websites and other online activities can be documented per user. In one to one learning environments as well as more traditional school computing settings, I think leaders need to work to foster a perceptual culture of accountability for online behavior, just like we try to do in the face to face world. Students need to know that online, they are NOT anonymous and they will be held accountable for their behavior in the virtual as well as the F2F world. This does not have to be a “big brother is watching” and “gotcha” sort of initiative, but rather a factual culture in which all online behavior is logged and can be viewed by parents, teachers, administrators, and students themselves.
