A very nice article, but 100% off base.
Big, greedy business and bought and paid for officials are simply after a slave labor market to compete with the other slave labor nations.
It is that simple.
America doesn't count, nor does its citizens.
This has been a growing problem since '65, and just like the '86 dog and pony show, nothing will happen but more and more illegals pouring in to deflate American wages for big business.
The answer here is simple:
Enforce the laws you set up in the first place.
SECURE that border, bring the CEO's up on charges, and start deporting.
It cannot be done overnight, but it sure as heck CAN be done, regardless of what BushCo keeps claiming.
Its been 42 years now, and we are still waiting to see the laws followed.

Corporate America, crooked politicians and Almighty greed.
THAT is the real culprit here.

[...] I wrote recently about “Humanizing discussions about immigration and borders.” This evening while searching online for a series of videos Marco Torres created with Australian administrators awhile back (which I did not find) I ran across his amazing documentary “tocayo”, linked from his misc. productions movie page. This story of Marco Antonio Vasquez’s experience risking his life to immigrate to the United States, to provide for his family back in Guatemala, is remarkable both for the events it relates as well as the effective digital storytelling methods employed in the video. Wow. [...]

At this time, immigration is on the minds of many in my area of SW Missouri. We recently had several raids at local factories which resulted in the arrests of several people. I just posted last night about the importance of collaboration and communication for our students with people in another geographical locations, with the reason being their success in a global economy. I realize now I overlooked another benefit that was right in front of my nose.

Very important topic you are touching...

Being an immigrant myself to this country, I have observed, overheard and "felt" attitudes towards foreigners over the last (almost) twenty years in this country. Creating global awareness for our students is imperative, not optional anymore.

The issue of erecting a wall on the borders troubles me. Walls have played many roles across history and have evoked and left behind much pain. I would like to recommend a movie I just saw a few days ago "The Tunnel" with Heino Ferch, Set in Berlin, Germany during the 1960s, it gives an incredible portrayal of what a wall can do to people and a country.

This is just a wonderful piece.

Very insightful.

Extremely helpful. My entire career has been serving immigrant children which has added so much to my life, the issues I blog about, my attempt to personalize and "see" this. I read someone saying we can't "look" this way, we should look at the "statistics". Ultimately that said a great deal to me.My statistics are very poor little children who i hold most dear.
With much to offer our world if we will allow them to bloom.
I wrote to this in a piece on Cinco De Mayo, something very heartfelt. Trying to share truths.

I really appreciate your writing. Really appreciate the kind of skill sets it takes to write this.
Thank you. Sarah Puglisi
