My kids also keep track of friends on Club Penguin, Webkinz and Neopets. Even my almost highschool aged son contacts friends through Neopets--in fact he'll talk to them there before he'll bother to pick up the phone. I don't know where he gets this from...maybe from his mother who keeps track of all her friends via IM?

Kevin: I agree, the advertising on MySpace is HORRIBLE. Hopefully people (young and old) will migrate to social networking environments like Facebook which are much less "in your face" as well as borderline inappropriate with advertising.

I sent the link to this post to Buddy via MySpace, which is what he requested in his article. You are certainly right that without links, much of the context and depth of the article is missing. :-)

Wes
Great letter
Did you send it to the newspaper?
(and without the links, does it lose some of its power?)

The thing that I hate most about MySpace for me and more importantly, for my students, is the constant barrage of advertising. I can't stand it.

Excellent round up of social networking sites.

I agree that Myspace is the least engaging though it remains the most popular. The real value of social networks is the people on them more so than the platform.

Classroom 2.0 is more fun for me because I have friends there who I respect and who influence my teaching but to my sixteen year old sister Myspace is the place to go to talk with friends. She'd be bored on a Ning site or Facebook because she doesn't know anyone.
