Drug violence in Mexico is bad: VERY bad

I spent a year living in Mexico City during 1992-1993 studying and writing about a variety of security issues including the U.S. led “war on drugs.” My longest paper from that research era, “US Drug Control in the Americas: Time for a Change,” reviewed historical and contemporary efforts (as of 1993) to combat the scourge

Looking beyond coercion, tests and seat time

One of the paradoxical results of our politically-imposed focus on high stakes accountability and test scores in U.S. K-12 public schools is that many teachers and students have their eyes on minimum standards rather than exceptionally high expectations for each student’s learning and growth. Arnold Toynbee’s quotation of the day from my iGoogle portal resonates

I continue to be a vocal advocate of web-based digital storytelling tools which primarily use still images and audio narration, like VoiceThread, but the growing availability of web-based video editing and animation creation environments may entice me to begin experimenting with web-based digital stories which go beyond narrated slideshows. One difficulty with all these websites
