Podcast289: Guidelines and Instructional Applications for Cell Phone Use at School

Contents

This podcast is a recording of my breakout session at the TechCon 2008 conference on October 17, 2008, in Naperville, Illinois. The official description of this session was: Cell phones are rapidly becoming ubiquitous in many school communities, but their presence in the classroom is commonly viewed as disruptive and unwanted. Modern cell phones offer a variety of capabilities, which are being used effectively by educators in different schools to support curricular learning objectives and boost student achievement. Explore reasons some school districts are embracing the use of cell phones for learning both inside and outside the classroom and examine specific guidelines school districts are utilizing for student cell phones. Explore specific applications of cell phones for learning, including use as electronic response systems, data access, media recording, homework tracking and social networking.

    Wes,

Great to hear another one of your podcasts! It seems like when I talk to you or read one of your blog posts I always come away with a few ideas for Poll Everywhere.

To respond to a few questions I heard about Poll Everywhere from your audience in this podcast; we do have a way to receive questions through our system with “Free Text Polls”. Students and teachers alike just send “CAST KEYWORD I don’t understand this concept” and it would appear on our text wall.

Also, if educators want to “register” their students in our system so they can see their names next to their responses, they would setup a free text poll asking, “What is your name”. The student would then send in their name and when the educator creates a report, they would add this poll and be able to correlate responses to students.

As always, if you or anybody has questions or want to kick some ideas around, email me at brad [@] polleverywhere [.] com
