Creativity, Interruptions, Boundaries and Leadership

“The key to getting in a creative state is to avoid interruptions.” So says John Clese in this wonderful, ten minute video from the recent World Creativity Forum in Belgium. My own experiences also validate this statement. My wife heard this excerpt of the video tonight as I was playing it on my laptop and

Reflections on EduCon 2.1 via an EdTechTalk Webcast

These are my notes from “Teachers Teaching Teachers” on EdTechTalk Live this evening, discussing the recent EduCon 2.1 conference in Philadelphia. There were some problems with Skype and delays in the connection tonight, but I learned a great deal none-the-less from the participants. Thanks to Paul Allison for his tweet earlier in the night which

Numeracy and Reading Development with the iPhone Weather App

It is important for students to be enthusiastic about learning. Motivation can be tied to many things, and one of the most important elements is background knowledge or schema. For the past several months, my five year old has enthusiastically continued developing her emerging numeracy and reading skills using the weather application on my iPhone.

Reflections on home content filtering and OpenDNS after a year of use

Do you use content filtering on your home network? (This free PollEverywhere survey will permit 30 people to vote on this question.) Create your own sms poll at Poll Everywhere I’ve written in the past about how draconian the content filters are in most of our Oklahoma public schools relative to countries with fewer legal

Iran, Sovereignty, Colonialism and the Values of the West

As a student of history, I suspect Dick Cheney may be regarded by historians in years to come as an enemy of self-determination, human rights, and long-term political stability internationally on a comparable scale to John Foster Dulles. I say “long-term political stability” because while short-term political stability can (at times) be realized by political

Mind blowing photo resolution from the inauguration

Wow. I have been a big fan of QuickTime VR panoramas for years, but after viewing this image of the inauguration scene in Washington D.C. this past week by David Bergman, I’ve just become an immediate cheerleader for Gigapan. According to David’s description on the Gigapan website: I made this Gigapan image from the north

Feedburner stats drop after Google account merge

Last night I logged into Feedburner and heeded the site’s recommendation to “update” my account by merging it to use the standard Google authentication scheme. I probably should have done more background reading first. Back in September, Alex Chitu described some of the problems others have had with the Google-Feedburner marriage. This evening I glanced

Student Storychasers in Washington DC this week

I’ve just shared the post “Colorado students blog inauguration experiences” on the ISTEconnects blog, which includes some background about the fantastic “When History Happens” project affiliated with the larger “Teaching with Primary Sources – Colorado” initiative. The U.S. Library of Congress is a partner in this collaboration. I’m thrilled this initiative has started in Oklahoma

Podcast299: Dreaming of the Storychaser’s Peace Train

This podcast is a bit of an ecclectic mix of ideas, song snippets, and educational project ideas. Foundationally, these relate to the idea that we’re going to have an enduring need to help younger students as well as older learners use digital tools in powerful, appropriate, and constructive ways. Whether we use the words citizen

Geotagged iReports from President Obama’s Inauguration

The iReporters were out in mass yesterday, and the geo-tagged map of their submissions to CNN looks quite different than it did right before inauguration day. Before: After: I love these types of mashups involving storychasing (citizen journalism and digital storytelling) with geographic maps. Geotagged content offers great opportunities for exploratory learning. Technorati Tags: cnn,

Watch and Read Citizen Journalist Reports from the Inauguration Tuesday

Tuesday, January 20, 2009, will be a historic day in the history of my nation.
