Discussing GirlsGoGames.com – A conversation about values and media literacy

My 8 year old daughter recently googled something like “cool games for girls” and came across the website GirlsGoGames.com. We had a discussion this morning about the site and this is something we need to talk about more at length, because of all the issues it raises. I asked Sarah to blog about this, but

It must be time to restart

Published by in edtech on June 8th, 2009

I titled our family learning blog “Learning Signs” because signs often reflect opportunities for growth and change. This “sign” seemed to suggest it was time to restart my computer. Tabbed browsing is great, but even with browser tabs Internet content can get overwhelming at times. Technorati Tags: tab, tabbed, browsing, browser

Oklahoma needs to join the Partnership for 21st Century Skills. The “21st Century Skill Incentive Fund Act,” introduced into the US Congress last month, may help. Incredible tornado footage

Thanks to both Eric Langhorst and Beth Still for tweeting the link to this amazing footage from Vortex2 of the tornado this past week in Wyoming. The most remarkable part of this video for me was this section which showed a “tornado within a tornado.” I remember many years ago talking about tornados with my

Published by in games on June 6th, 2009

My son is off to Boy Scout camp next week, and he has asked me to “sit” for him on Travian while he’s offline for a week. This was the strategy he related to me today in his instructions for his “sitter.” Technically I am going to be logging in on his Travian account rather

Public Service Announcements To Combat Meth

Methamphetamine addiction is a plague. Back in January, I participated in the “Crystal Darkness” campaign here in Oklahoma to raise awareness about the scourge of meth as well as other problems we face in our communities with substance abuse. The dominant technology in the classroom

Published by in 1:1 on June 4th, 2009

I snapped these photographs in the media center at U.S. Grant High School in Oklahoma City yesterday. My thought was: Here is the technology which still predominates in our classrooms in 2009! Will all our schools be implementing 1:1 learning initiatives within 5 years? Within 10 years? Will these overhead projectors still be in use

Downloading and Converting Ustream FLV Videos to DVD

The medical missionaries to Niger whose presentation I recorded and webcasted on Sunday (with permission, of course) asked yesterday to have the Ustream video recordings of their presentation taken offline. They reviewed the recordings and were concerned that some of the things they said might be perceived negatively by the Niger government, and they didn’t
