Remember to turn YouTube channel comment moderation ON

My recent experiences moderating comments on a relatively popular YouTube video have led to lots of learning, and the most recent example concerns YouTube “channel” comment moderation. By default, all comment moderation is turned OFF when you upload a video to YouTube, and moderation is turned OFF for comments people leave on your channel. Channel

Perceptions of Beauty, PhotoShop, and Media Literacy

The “Dove Campaign for Real Beauty” is a marketing campaign for Dove soaps, but also an effort to address widespread, destructive advertising which creates false perceptions of beauty among girls, boys, women and men worldwide every day. The following video, “Evolution,” is an advertisement for Dove soap but also makes a powerful statement in 75

Incentive for better learning about communism, capitalism, and government

Parents, government, civics and economics teachers: This request is for you. I received the following message this past week in my YouTube inbox, doubtless as a result of my delayed moderation of this user’s comment on my 9 year old daughter’s YouTube response video to President Obama’s speech to students in September. The short message

Evidence Bing is Lame – and Google Search Rocks (a NY caller asking for AOL Press)

I’m sharing this post not to malign or criticize an elderly person’s computer literacy skills, but rather to recount a rather strange phone conversation which took place today and attempt a reconstruction of how this interstate telephonic discussion came to pass. In one sense, it is inspiring to learn someone 80 years old is working

In Praise of Outdoor School, Ed Holzberger, Classen SAS and Oklahoma City Public Schools

This past Wednesday, my 11 year old son and I were on a three mile hike in the Arbuckle Mountains of south-central Oklahoma, heading to “three falls” about a mile from from Camp Classen. I turned to him and said, “Wow, isn’t this amazing? Just think, you could be sitting in school today, and here

Educon 2.2 in Philly: January 29 – 31, 2010

Chris Lehmann posted the “EduCon 2.2 — Call For Conversations and Registration” about a week ago. I have not been able to attend EduCon in person yet, but the presentations I’ve seen online and experienced vicariously through the blog post reflections and notes of others have been phenomenal. If there’s any way you can get

Tools to simplify meeting scheduling

Doodle remains one of my all-time favorite web 2.0 tools, as a browser-based, platform independent scheduling tool to identify open meeting dates and times for any group. I recently learned about ScheduleOnce, which also offers a free, online scheduling tool. ScheduleOnce’s conference planner also looks good for setting up phone calls or videoconferences with people

Immersion in other cultures enhances creativity

The 10.5 minute YouTube video, “How to stimulate creativity? Go live abroad” shares some interesting research findings about creativity and those who live for extended periods of time in foreign cultures. “William Maddux, an assistant professor of organisational behavior at INSEAD,” shares these research findings. Maddux found that simply TRAVELING abroad was/is not correlated with

FTC mandates disclosure for bloggers receiving freebies/payments

Since writers started publishing (long before anyone thought of “blogging”) the need for transparency and disclosure has been important. People should be able to reasonably identify bias in someone’s writing, particularly a “reporter,” when that person is being paid or compensated in a way which could influence their shared ideas. The English Wiktionary currently defines

Dell Mini10V Netbook, Ubuntu, Win7, and Hackintoshes

I spent more hours than I care to admit this past weekend working with and on my Dell Mini10V netbook, which I purchased back in August. I ordered it with Dell’s version of Ubuntu Linux pre-installed, but hadn’t tried installing other versions of Linux or other operating systems until this past Friday. Overall, this entire

Considering Somalia’s Situation: Rated as the #1 Failed State

The September 2009 issue of National Geographic magazine features an article on page 70 titled, “Somalia: The Number One Failed Nation.” According to the English Wikipedia, the term “failed state” is: …often used by political commentators and journalists to describe a state perceived as having failed at some of the basic conditions and responsibilities of

LAME much easier to install on latest Audacity for Mac

I am a HUGE fan of the free, open source audio editing program Audacity. I installed Audacity on a new Mac today, and was pleased to learn that the default Mac installer for the LAME encoder now has an installer file, and places the LAME “library” in a convenient location which is easily browseable from

Where do you find the time? Shirky’s Answer

This past Thursday night, I was delighted to be a guest on the Seedlings’ show on EdTechTalk, hosted by Alice Barr, Bob Sprankle, and Cheryl Oakes. My daughter, Sarah, joined us for the conversation and chimed in with both her ideas and questions for other participants. Near the end of the show, Bob asked me

A hazard of moderating comments on a popular YouTube video

I’m glad to still be moderating comments on Sarah’s video response to President Obama’s speech to students several weeks ago, rather than leaving comments open without moderation. The video has received over 180,000 views worldwide to date, and while the comment discussion has thankfully become MUCH less active than it was immediately following the speech,

2010 will be an interesting year for Oklahoma educational politics

In the state of Oklahoma in the USA, where I live, as voters we elect our state’s top official for public education. This position is officially known as the “Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction,” but more commonly called the “Oklahoma State School Superintendent.” When our family moved to Oklahoma in 2006, I was surprised

If Amazon eats your homework, you might get thousands of dollars

Remember this past July when Amazon acted like “Big Brother” by remotely deleting (without permission or advance notice) some purchased eBooks from customers’ Kindles and iPhone Kindle applications? Ironically the deleted titles were by George Orwell. This week a Michigan high school student who “lost his homework notes” when Amazon ordered that electronic file deletion
