I'll join in with an 'Amen'. That's why I didn't buy the 3G model. I use MyWi to connect my iPad whenever I need to. Works great, although it is a bit of a battery drain.

Really great stuff available for jailbroken folks lately. Wireless syncing to iTunes, iTuneless syncing with USB file access, and even complete VGA output to projector for the iPad.

Mind you, iPhone OS4 will bring some of this stuff to non-jb's, but the JB community is still leading the way.

Yes, MyWi works wonderfully to create a wifi hotspot using an iPhone, which can be used with an iPad or any other wireless device using 802.11B wifi. Hotspots can be created with or without a password. MyWi is a $10 app and requires a jailbreak. Several free jailbreak options are now available in addition to the iPhone Dev Team's hack, these include Black Ra1n and Spirit.

I need help. Okay, I got the iPhone Modem on my phone, and laptop. But when I press connect on the laptop, it immediately says:
Error Creating WiFi Network (List Networks). Error Code:2150899714
What do I do? Please help me, this is aggravating!

Yeah, it's another alternative app store. I just like the layout/look/feel better than Cydia. Better UI for the most part. I haven't had any problems with it so far. But I do understand having a healthy dose of paranoia. I've nearly bricked a few iPhones at this point and it's a horribly sickening feeling when it happens! So far I've never been able to do something that I couldn't undo :)

I originally installed the MyWi app from Cydia which included "Rock," but it initially messed up my iPhone and I was fearful I'd bricked it. When I plugged it into my computer it came back to life. So this time I tried the "non-Rock" version. What is the advantage to using/installing Rock? Is it just an alternative app store?

Well, now I'll have to give DemoGod a try, haven't had a chance to do that yet.

But I agree with your assessment of MiWi. I paid for it a couple of days ago myself and am thrilled with it.

For the record, if you install Rock (http://rockyourphone.com/), an alternative to the Cydia store, you can download MiWi with a 7 day free trial, and then pay for it with PayPal (I did both).

Now I'm off to try DemoGod :)

OK, I have now tested both iPhoneModem as well as MyWi and have reached my official opinion: MyWi ROCKS and is well worth $10! Unfortunately there is not a demo version, and I had to buy it using Appsidy. Despite negative reviews, I found Appsidy straightforward to use.

The best thing about MyWi is you don't have to run any client-side apps on a laptop computer to setup a WiFi hotspot, like iPhoneModem requires. AND, here's a great additional bonus. When you create a MyWi ad-hoc WiFi network, DemoGod works great with ScreenSplitr! This is huge, since some access points are configured to block ports needed by DemoGod. Woo hoo!

See my guest blog post here from last week, "Demonstrate iPhone / iPod Touch Applications with ScreenSplitr / DemoGod," for more details about these apps.

Thanks for the tip. It appears there are two versions of MyWi available now on Cydia. One includes the software "Rock Your Phone" with MyWi as a component, and the other is just MyWi. I installed the first version (I think MyWi 3.1.2) and my iPhone didn't restart springboard afterwards. I did a forced shut down (holding down both the home and power buttons for 5 seconds) and tried to startup the iPhone. Each time I did this it got stuck on the Apple startup screen. After plugging into iTunes, the iPhone did start up normally.

The "MyWi only" version in Cydia didn't appear to have a trial version, but was newer (3.1.4 I think.) I did learn in the process of troubleshooting this that a free recovery utility is available for jailbroken iPhones when they get stuck on the Apple startup screen. I ended up not having to use it, however.

This situation shows how it is very important to:
1- Have a complete backup before you mess with Jailbroken apps
2- Be mentally ready to do a full restore of your iPhone if things go wrong
3- Have some time on your hands to mess with jailbreak troubleshooting

For now I'm sticking with iPhoneModem, and I'll do some testing with MyWi later. I noticed a strange thing yesterday when using it... after my computer had created the iPhoneModem hotspot, I connected my iPod Touch to it and then put my laptop to sleep. The iPod Touch remained connected to the iPhone via the iPhoneModem ad hoc wireless network, even though the laptop wasn't open anymore to create it. (?) It seemed like the iPhone was using iPhoneModem to serve as a wireless router. I'm not sure I understand how this worked.

I'm eager to do more testing with MyWi when I have the time and resources! :-)

I haven't iPhoneModem yet, but I just started using MiWi. It's 9.99 with a 7 day trial. After using it at MACUL, I fully intend to buy it. Basically, it will bridge your 3G connection to WiFi, USB or Bluetooth! The nice thing is, you can make it a secure network, or leave it open and allow several people to all connect through your iPhone. Of course, it's not a huge bandwidth pipe, but great for small groups when there is no open wifi.
