One of the coolest things about the EPUB eBook format is its ability to include “embedded” videos within the eBook which are playable directly. It is NOT necessary to have a “live” Internet connection to view these. They do not stream. The videos play as part of the eBook. Together with images and hyperlinks, I think embedded videos truly make EPUB eBooks “21st century digital books!”
I’ve included seventeen (17) different videos and screencasts in my forthcoming eBook, “Playing with Media: simple ideas for powerful sharing.” These are all screencasts I’ve recorded in the past two years. The “enhanced” EPUB version of the book I’ll be selling for $9.99 on the iTunes bookstore will include these videos with the eBook, but the Kindle and other eBook versions will not since all eReaders don’t support playback of embedded videos. These are the 17 videos included in the book, listed by chapter. I’m SO excited to be able to include videos in this eBook!

Okay When can we buy it?!
I’m hoping to get it for sale online this weekend! I’m fixing a bunch of broken links now and trying to finish my ‘final editing review’ today. 🙂
Thanks Kevin, it’s been a lot more work than I anticipated but VERY good overall… I’m going to be glad to finish this one, but it’s given me a taste for writing eBooks and I have several more ideas.
My next writing goal after this is my dissertation defense in early fall tho. 🙂
It is interesting to see an eBook that is a compilation of videos. I would be interested to see if other textual content is being created as part of this process and how the retailers react to such a publication. A couple of things to keep in mind: 1) file size with all the videos may be very large resulting in long download times; 2) the ability to include videos on the nookColor and 3) the ability to produce Kindle A/V files that can include video. You should try to hit as many channels as possible. I’ve seen it all work, especially when a professional digital publishing solution provider gets involved.
