For
setting and getting goals, you may want to check out a goal setting app
 called GoalsOnTrack, a
very nicely built web app designed for tracking goals and todo lists, and
supports time tracking too. It's clear, focused, easy to navigate.

Wow! This is powerful stuff! What I love about beginning with the goal sheet is that it truly DOES personalize for the learner. It puts them automatically into the driver's seat with their engagement and learning. It encourages accountability for students and ownership, thus greater motivation to succeed. I love the quote by Zig,
“What the mind pictures, the body carries out”! I will definitely use the words of wisdom shared within this post. Thank you for sharing! Laurie :)

No caviate- this doesn't block iPhone App Store purchases only third party purchases that are billed to your AT&T account. Additionally, AT&T provides a code you can use to authorize purchases with the block enabled.

I agree with you Wesley- this feature should one that you have to disable. I discovered this problem much later than I wish I had... from July to February of this year about six different companies charged supposed 'authorized' services to all but one of our families cell phones. While AT&T refunded 60 days worth, their policy does not go beyond 60 days. While I should have caught these charges, our monthly bill is upwards of 15 pages!
The representation I spoke with did give me an additional $25 credit however it feels a bit shallow since these charges were not authorized.

I'm thinking of starting a petition on Change.org that demanding that AT&T change this to an automatic feature.

Just wanted to make sure that I corrected the comment from jpmarr regarding iPhones. You are able the to use the Purchase Blocker because 1)AT&T provides you with a pin number that you can use and 2)Items purchased through the App store are not blocked.
Unfortunately I found out about this and several other scams after incurring 6 months of charges over our families 5 cell phones. While AT&T refunded the last 60 days of charges, they would not refund all the charges. They did provide me an additional $25 credit however for the hassel.I agree with you Wesley that this should be an automatic feature that you have to disable. These scams trick you by automatically signing you up if you fail to reply 'STOP' to their texts.

I'm considering starting a petition to get AT&T to make a change to this policy.

Might I suggest Skyping with like minded professionals and/or schools that have implemented technology based instruction. We Skyped with Dr. Rae Niles, Apple Distinguished Educator, who shared her passion and enthusiasm about digital learning. We Skyped with Jessica Asbury, a teacher in Kansas City, Kansas, who uses iPads 120 minutes each day with her students to manage her literacy block. We Skyped with Christi Paradise and Regina Hartley at Steed Elementary in Midwest City, Oklahoma, who shared their iTouch implementation as a result of receiving the K20 grant. All were an inspiration providing a direction, if you will, to embark upon. Of course, any workshop or presentation that Dr. Fryer gives is worth its weight in gold as his level of proficiency is unparalleled to any professional development I've attended. You can also reference our project wiki that outlines basics of our iPad vision at our small rural school, Asher PS. Here is the link http://whitswiki.wikispaces.com/When+I+Say+iPad%2C+You+Say+Ka+Chow%21. Hope this helps.

Hey Wes, I don't ever assume that software tools are included when a school gets computers and would add don't assume your stuck if there is no funding for software tools. A couple of quick links include:

Software for Starving Students http://free.wosc.edu from my old school. The download links aren't there anymore, but you can see a great list of really great tool.

I also like what OER commons has for this situation at:
http://www.oercommons.org/browse/keyword/classroom-management

How exciting for them.

Start using that computer every chance you get, & let the students do the same. New word encountered in reading? Go look it up. Current event catching the students' attention? Find out more about it.

Look for lesson ideas across all subject areas at Thinkfinity.org and find the wonder of the day at Wonderopolis.

Tech integration includes projects, but at its most basic level it means taking advantage of the computer as a tool in a way that should become as natural as breathing.

Also, sign up for a Twitter account and follow people like Wes Fryer and the people he follows and quotes. Check your Twitter for 15 minutes at some point every day and a wealth of ideas will find you!

This is what I have dealt with for the last 3 years in the OKC schools as a teacher. I and my students developed excellent resources on Wikispaces only to have it blocked. I was given the same exact reasons when I contacted IT. I tried with 2 different principals to use the district "procedure" to get sites unblocked to no avail. OKCPS: there are fantastic, FREE resources out there for our students to use. Let's join the 21st century and use our computers for something more than "drill and kill".

Every profession has its share of deadweight employees, but my 30 year, firsthand experience has consistently been that teachers are our among nation's most precious resources–people who live a calling more than they work a job. Beating up teachers in politics and media is a cheap shot, even a distraction from the real and significant issues.

And Wes, if you want a really compelling read, may I highly recommend Lee Fang's investigative journalism piece, How Online Learning Companies Bought America's Schools. It's a long piece that lays out the case of a carefully planned, organized strategy to tap into the funding of our public schools for profit and control. It's disturbing to say the least.

Thank you! It is amazing to me that even teachers have bought into the failing school/teacher myth. I was at a conference yesterday and out of about 40 teachers, 3 of us stood up to defend teachers against the lazy, job-for-life, economy killing, unprofessional image. Yes, it was an education conference. Very sad.

Nice article. There is a big caviate with this, however. If you have a smartphone (iPhone) you cannot enable this option or you will be unable to purchase any items on your smartphone. You can still sync from your computer, but with iCloud things can become complicated.

Hello, Dr. Fryer!
This was a lot of information to take in at once. I realized as I was reading your post that I am unclear on the policies of my own school system regarding social media. I know that we have had teachers placed on leave and reprimanded for communicating with students on Facebook. The information you have presented asks much deeper questions. I was most intrigued by the email issue.

We have district wide email that is used for school system business as well as communicating with family. Obviously, there is no right to privacy on the school district owned email. However, one of the questions posed by an audience member perplexed me. Can an open records request be made for a teacher's personal email account if they conduct business with it? The answer was individuals can. Does that mean a parent could possibly request to see the personal email of a teacher if she used it for school business? I like the comment towards the end where the presenter tells the audience that he advises his staff to "vent into the air" because it does not create a public record. Good advice!

A summary of my posts to your blog will be on, Heather Weaver's EDM 310 Class Blog, by February 12th.

Thank you for all of the thought provoking information.

Dr. Fryar,
Thank-you for posting the notes from this session at the OTA conference today. I did not attend this session because I predicted it would be a rant on all of the evils of Facebook. Social Media used appropriately can be an amazing tool and it is unfortunate that professional adult are not modeling appropriate digital citizenship.
I appreciate your COMMENTS.

I agree with some of what the presenter said, other bits seem to retell rumors and create fear. For example, I'm still looking to find a case of Disney suing a school over showing a movie in class though I hear the rumor about it all the time (although he's right that movies shouldn't be shown as entertainment in school). Also, I'm not sure why he makes a distinction about performances where fees are charged...not charging a fee reduces damages but doesn't give one a right to ignore copyrights.

I wish that more copyright presentations and teachers in general would take a look at the Fair Use Doctrine itself. It only has four points and isn't that hard to understand. If a project satisfies the four prongs of fair use then teachers can feel comfortable proceeding with a particular project.

Thanks for your notes, Wes. I had to go to an NBCT meeting. Glad I did, because there were 4 McGen candidate there with questions (including one who is starting the process this year - even with all the problems with the legislature right now). Anyway, I was disappointed because I thought this session would be about how to do just what you were talking about. I guess I'll have to find other tools to help me work on that.

Puh-leeze.
Has this kid ever gone to a public library? Plenty of nudes there -- sculptures, drawings; even the written word has been know to occasionally be suggestive.
What exactly is it that Ferguson wants her son protected from? How on earth would she deal with a trip to the mall where there is a constant and fairly unavoidable onslaught of Victoria's Secret-like stores? And heaven forbid they venture inside of a 7-11 or any bookstore with magazines.
The boy was curious. Why can't PC schools complain to KFOR that Ferguson was neglectful? The AUP clearly shows someone tried to educate the Fergusons.
Sad that nobody was around when he began seeking information on this forbidden topic. What a wonderful opportunity for a parent to explain the world and teach correct behavior about relationships and biology. Oh. And making good choices.

Taking away the computer for a child in a one to one school seems ridiculous. We don't stop teaching a kid to read because he choose to look at an inappropriate magazine. We teach him responsible choices. The same thing should happen with computers. There should be consequences, of course - hopefully set up by the parent, but the school can chime in too. However, taking away the huge part of his learning at that school is just silly.

Hey Wes,

I'm not sure I would agree with a key logger on 1:1 laptops. Have you heard of other districts that do that? It seems like too much of an invasion of privacy. In this situation, mom attended an information session. It did not say where he accessed the inappropriate sites, but I'm pretty sure they were blocked at school. If it happened at home, it was mom's responsibility to monitor the sites her son was going to, not the schools. I'm sure it was explained pretty clearly that there would be no filtering at home.

Computers and tablets are only assistants and a good
teacher’s will always be needed.

However social networks such as facebook and YouTube as well
as great resources including Wikipedia and Wolfram-Alpha are here to stay so
that educators must use them in the teaching process.

Some time ago YouTube moved a lot of their educational
content to a separate domain giving people access a broad set of educational
videos.

However, some complaints include the variety of the content
found there as well as the need for schools to register on YouTube under the
academic section in order to show their videos, leaving out many academics,
professionals and students not formally associated with mainstream schools
which contribute with great videos.

Many academics are posting great educational videos and
materials online. The only problem is to sort the good ones from the rest and
present them in an organized manner.

This effort is being done by: http://utubersity.com
which presents the best educational videos available on YouTube in an
organized, easy to find way to watch and learn. It also links the videos to
related content in Wikipedia or associated websites.

They are classified and tagged in a way that enables people
to find these materials more easily and efficiently and not waste time browsing
through pages of irrelevant search results.

The website also enhances the experience using other means
such as recommending related videos, Wikipedia content and so on. There's also
a Spanish version called http://utubersidad.com
