GIS (Geographic Information System) connections can be powerful! Although a “consumer” rather than “professional” level product, the free version of Google Earth offers amazing potential to connect places, people, hyperlinks and data.KML and KMZ files are used in conjunction with Google Earth. These are some of my favorite KML/KMZ links! KML files are uncompressed files you can change with a text editor, KMZ files are compressed and not editable once created. Learn how to create your own KML/KMZ files with this tutorial from Google. My KML files include:
- Classroom Blog World Tour: I hope to make this a dynamic KML file at some point that populates from a MySQL database. For now, if you would like your classroom added to the tour, please email me your 1) Classroom blog address, 2) City/State/Country, 3) Personal blog address if you have one, 4) Name, 5) Grade level of your students. Even when available, these Google Earth links are NOT to the actual school, they point just to the city/town’s default Google Earth view.
Favorite KML/KMZ files created by others:
- Sir Ernest Shackleton Google Earth “documentary” (blog post from Google Earth blog) - 1.9 MB
- Volcanoes of the World
- Documented meteor impacts worldwide (>26,000)
- World Wide Panorama
- Discovery Channel World Video tours (unfortunately ads are included)
