Curriculum Resources for Intellectual Property / Copyright Issues

Some ideas for educators wanting curriculum relating to copyright for students.

The MPAA and other commercial pro-traditional copyright groups have made some headlines in the past for the pre-packaged copyright curriculum materials they have put out for kids. Film and Music industry companies are involved in these curriculum battles. An example of these curriculum materials is the “Play It Cyber Safe” cafe on www.playitcybersafe.com sponsored by the Business Software Alliance. This site has attracted some press attention for being included in Weekly Reader materials.

The following are some non-commercial sponsored copyright curriculum and information resources that may be helpful:

– Elizabeth Townsend’s Academic Copyright website: http://academiccopyright.typepad.com/academiccopyright/ – a lawyer and educational advocate based at the Stanford Law School Center for Internet and Society
– Copyright and Fair Use by the Stanford University Libraries: http://fairuse.stanford.edu/
– The Collaborative Copyright and Technology Law Curriculum: http://copyrightcurriculum.com) – a wiki-based site (like Wikipedia, anyone can submit and edit content)
– Copyright Issues for Youth Services Librarians from the ALA May 2004 (PowerPoint link) – The American Library Association has some resources on copyright, and is expected to distribute new materials in Spring 2005. Legislative updates relating to copyright are availalble from ALA on www.ala.org/copyright.

In addition to these resources from other folks, My article “Copyright 101 for Educators: Winter 2003” is available. If you know of other educational fair use / copyright curriculum related sites not included here, please comment and list them here!
