Moving at the Speed of Creativity by Wesley Fryer

Alexander’s “Back to the Corral” Stop Motion Classic

I originally posted this in February 2004, but I am deleting the blog that I had posted it on, and reposting it here. Stopmotion moviemaking is so much fun! For more fun examples of Stop Motion movies that may prove inspirational, visit this website from Apple’s UK division.

What fun it is to create your own stop motion movies! I have long eyed the Clay Animation Starter Kit from Tech4Learning but it’s $200+ price tag has deterred me– now with iStopMotion’s free 7 day demo Alexander and I have created in a couple hours what is sure to become an instant cult classic:

Back to the Corral: Our first iStopMotion Effort” (no password required)

This 30 second marvel (plus intro footage, character spots, and end credits: one minute, 30 sec) actually represents 346 separate frames taken with an iBot firewire camera connected to a Macintosh Powerbook. Our preproduction, production and post-production times were roughly:

Set Construction: 1 hour (the set actually gave us the idea for making this movie – Everything was put together by Alexander, he was proud to have used every single Lincoln Log in his set to create this Bonanza-like masterpiece)
Planning: 2 minutes (all the ideas were Alexander’s)
Software download and brief scan of how-to tutorial: 5 min
Production Videography: 1 hour
Post-Production Editing with iMovie: 1 hour

If you are wanting to have some fun with stop motion moviemaking, I highly commend iStopMotion. It is hard to imagine a process this fun and creative getting any easier! (BTW, at this point Alexander is 6 years old– his career options in videography look very bright!)
