Moving at the Speed of Creativity by Wesley Fryer

Impossible? Not!

I love this quotation from Nicholas Negraponte this morning, blogged by Andy Carvin:

Impossible at MIT is a code word for ‘do it.’

One major key to the MIT $100 laptop project is getting the cost of the laptop screen down. What Andy reports is just thrilling:

The laptop’s display is a major focus of the Media Lab’s efforts. They’ve managed to bring the cost down to $35 per display. It’s a dual mode display – a 7″ screen, as well as a reflective display that can be read in bright daylight. Eventually he hopes the display will cost 10 cents per square inch, and will be produced by being printed on an e-ink printer, technology developed by the Media Lab.

This laptop will have a hand crank for power. I am reading this and it almost seems like science fiction. But it is real.

I have been working over the last 2 years to bring laptops to students here in rural West Texas via a Technology Immersion Pilot grant administered by the State of Texas. The speed of change in technology is absolutely astounding right now. We are collectively moving at the speed of creativity.

What an exciting day to be alive, and engaged in conversations as well as actions that MATTER in education. No one has ever lived at a more exciting time in history than we are today. 🙂
