PhotoStory 3 for Windows

PhotoStory 3 looks like a superb, free tool for aspiring digital storytellers using Windows XP. I saw David Jakes demo this today at TechForum, and it is really super. The next time I teach digital media and graphics in a Windows lab I will definitely be using it, along with Moviemaker 2 (also free.) It does require installation of the free Windows Media Player 10 also.

For Mac users, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iTunes and Garageband from the iLife suite provide a powerful set of tools that (I think at least) far exceeds the power of PhotoStory and Moviemaker. But it is none-the-less exciting to see Redmond releasing free software tools like these for the Windows world.

If you have feedback (positive or negative) on PhotoStory 3 software please let me know by commenting here!

Photostory is relatively easy to use; however, the finished product cannot be viewed on a Macintosh unless you “Squeeze” it to an MP4. WMP on the Mac cannot play the Photostory file.

I use Photo Story all the time. Tonight, in fact we hosted a community technology night at our school and we (some other teachers and students) showed it to a group of about 30 parents to use. I have used it in class and it takes about 10 minutes before students are producing their own video. I’ve had my 8th grade class take some of the Brady photos of the Civil War and create a Civil War video that turned out really neat. Last year I used it personally to create a DVD of my 2 year old daughter for the grandparents. Excellent product by Microsoft.
