Top 10 NG Photos

The top 10 photos of 2005 from National Geographic are compelling.

My personal favorite is the first-ever image of a live giant squid. For anyone who read “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” by Jules Verne growing up, these may seem like a nightmare come true. This National Geographic article from September gives more details about the Japanese scientists who photographed the behemoth, estimated to be 25 feet long.

That is just a fraction of the size of the largest giant squids, however. According to the article,

The longest giant squid on record measured 59 feet (18 meters), including its two elongated tentacles.

Yikes!

“20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” is incidentally available as a free audio book from Project Gutenberg. 🙂 I find the computer voice synthesizer to be fairly unpalatable, however, I prefer sticking with human-read audio books!
