$100 laptop MOU signed

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed this week between the United Nations Development Programme and the nonprofit organization One Laptop per Child (OLPC).

OLPC spokesman Nicholas Negraponte said:

One laptop per child is key, making learning more seamless with living, play and family life, versus being limited to school. Teacher preparation is important, in parallel with peer-to-peer and self education.

In mid-December 2005, Quanta Computer Inc. of Taiwan was chosen as the original design manufacturer for the project.

This new MOU is significant because it formalizes the UN’s role (through UNDP) to:

…work with local and international partners to design and develop programmes to deliver OLPC technology and learning resources to schools in the Least Developed Countries (LDCs).
