George Gilder, in his book Telecosm: How Infinite Bandwidth Will Revolutionize our World, reflects on limitless internet connectivity as the defining characteristic of our emerging age. Given current commercial efforts to bring fiber optic cable to the homes of US consumers, this envisioned future is closer than many imagine. Powerful, inexpensive computers are emerging and transforming the communication landscape in ways never imagined by our ancestors. New educational approaches are desperately needed to engage the digital immigrants studying in our schools in this new era. Technology alone, however, will not provide us with the educational system we need. Only passionate, creative, and caring teachers can provide that future, along with visionary leaders courageous enough to set them and their students free with more autonomy and time.
