I am a big advocate of helping students not only develop knowledge, motivations, and capacities related to local and national citizenship– but also global citizenship. Given this fact, it should not be surprising I was thrilled to discover the UN CyberSchoolBus website today. According to the site’s mission statement, the specific aims of the site are:
- To create an on-line global education community
- To create educational action projects to show students that they have a role in finding solutions to global problems
- To give students a voice in global issues
- To provide high-quality teaching resources to a wide range of educators in a cost-effective manner.
The website has a wealth of resources, including links to ongoing collaborative project opportunities, games, and informational resources. Some of the best ones I found include:
- Infonation Advanced: An amazing tool to compare lots of different national statistics (categories include population, health, technology, economy, & environment) between countries– the website creates dynamic graphs ideal for comparing similarities, differences, and looking for trends.
- UN Webcasts: Check out live events and announcements from the UN.
- Voices of Youth Photo Contest currently focusing on “inspirational women.”
- Games including Food Force, Flag Tag and more.
In addition to online resources, you can subscribe to a UN CyberSchoolBus email newsletter.
