Screencasting at Your Library

Screencasting @ your Library! – http://hla2006.pbwiki.com
(I AM RECORDING THIS SESSION AND WILL POST AS A PODCAST LATER)

Becky Rathgeber, BYU Hawaii
Linda Uchida, Hawaii Pacific University

PPT for this presentation

Screencasting is being used in library instruction, for tutorials and quizzes

Linda demonstrating accessing a password-protected portal, and the way things used to be demonstrated
– Example of static PowerPoint showing instructions
– included screenshots

Now an example using Macromedia Captivate
– file size is an issue, need to keep it smaller
– much more engaging, includes movement, audio
– Captivate can include buttons that permit people to navigate through a screencast
– automatically creates captions, which is very important for 501 compliance (accessibility)

Linda finds Captivate easy to use
– first create a storyboard (edit your cue text)
– record your caption
– work with movement of the screen
– I have done about 5 online tutorials since last year

Design for 800 x 600 computers (some screens not very large)

Can be easy to update and change

Disadvantage:
– commercial products are the best, cost about $200
– free alternative for software is not as intuitive

Great website on screencasting for libraries: Greg Notess: Library & Screencasting

Be careful to just get inside the browser for recording, you don’t want to distract people with too much extra information
– demonstration mode just runs without user input
– another mode is available which permits students to click buttons, so you can do an assessment / quiz

Everything is captured as slides
– you can adjust mouse movements, delete slides, etc.

I like captivate because of the way it breaks things down for editing slide by slide
– this is not the best if you are going to do a live presentation
– only captures when you click on something
– really nice that it automatically adds captions
– captivate just exports to Flash

Try to keep screencasts under 3 minutes
– people are getting used to YouTube size
– not needed to make it as big as possible
– just make sure size is big enough for the content you are showing
– don’t include customized portal pages, show things like the users will see
