I’ve been working quite a bit lately in Google Docs and Google sites for a RFP related to a grant, and I was not able to rename the worksheets in a Google Spreadsheet using the latest FireFox browser on a WinXP computer. IE 6 worked fine though. I always prefer to use FireFox on a Windows computer when I have to use a Windows computer, but in this case I’m having to use IE. Strange.
I really like the “file cabinet” feature of Google Sites which permits users to upload files and put them in organizing folders, and then share access with others. Our Celebrate Oklahoma Voices sub-committee is using a private Google Site for this RFP review process, and we also have a public Google Site to share access to our workshop handouts. Those are all licensed via Creative Commons, so if you’re looking for handouts on Audacity or PhotoStory please feel free to use or modify these!

Wes, I tweeted you my setup, which works fine for me, far as I can tell. One other comment: I like the file cabinet and folders with Sites, but I wish I could “close” the folders so that everything didn’t all show on screen once it was put in folders. Or is that just because I am the Site owner? I have a ton of files on this one Site, and I think it would look better if you could have just one folder at a time actually “open” and showing its files.
I agree Diane, and I wish users could rename folders once they are created. It appears you can’t now, so if you make a mistake you have to move any files out of that folder, delete it, create a new one, and move the files into it.
It took me awhile to wrap my head around Google Sites and see how it works relative to Google pages. I love your Google site about geocaching and Google Earth! Thanks for tweeting it to me! I am teaching the third part of a five part class on Google Earth tonight and we’ll take a look at your resources.
Wes,
I use the IE Tab plugin for Firefox. Our school’s SIS system likes IE better than Firefox. So I hit the IE button when I use it in Firefox, and it works just fine. It needs to have the IE engine installed, so that may not fix the problem on Mac or Linux.
Cool, thanks for that tip James. I will download it for IE on Windows when I get back to my Windows computer…
I can’t get Google Docs to work on Firefox on any of my machines. It’s not sizing itself to the window properly, so I can’t see the list of documents! It works fine on IE. I appear to be the only person having this problem, because I can’t find a mention of it anywhere!
