Moving at the Speed of Creativity by Wesley Fryer

More Marco Torres at ACTEM 09

These are my notes from Marco Torres‘ second keynote follow-up session at ACTEM 2009 in Augusta, Maine, on 16 October 2009. MY THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS ARE IN ALL CAPS.

Marco is showing Inspiration 8 now, and how he uses it for project planning
– using notes under Inspiration bullets

Taking a production approach to teaching: the way we would produce a TV show
– hitting multiple language arts standards/objectives at the same time

Students involved with planning are those also creating the project
– as the teacher, I am not doing all the planning up front, the kids are involved

Alton Brown has a show on the Food Network called “Good Eats”
– I’ve had a chance to work on the production side with his show

ALTON’S YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/user/LikeTheHat

Alton uses multiple examples outside the area of focus
– lots of examples of mathematics, science, more

If your students had a chance to make a 30 second video about you, about your teaching, what would it look like?

Alton Brown “egg” commercial Food Network

I can show teachers and parents over time the students’ growth in thinking over time, looking at their mind maps they are working on

Make sure you add some emotion in your videos

Another show to watch: MythBusters
– Pirates wear a patch over their eye because ships didn’t have electricity in the bottom, so pirates changed their eye sensitivity when they had to go down into the hold
Here is the episode

Great to use these video clips, look at what these professional producers are doing to bring in content, emotion, etc.

Great to connect with kids

Superstar Teachers!
MIT professor, Walter Lewan
– every day 7000 kids are getting online to see him teach physics
– look him up on iTunesU, lots of great videos there
– he addresses lots of these video elements: varied, includes passion

Video: Humberto Cuentas
– former student
– in my economics class, he never did any of his work
– after school, he always used to be interested in how we created remixes and mashups
– I was a DJ in high school
– I knew he was interested in this aspect of music

JUST DISCONNECTED FROM ROSA, WHO WAS CONNECTED VIA ICHAT 🙂

People who saw me working in my classroom told me what I was doing was business planning, project management
– this whole moviemaking thing is really good business plan
– so I asked Humberto to get together a business plan to put together or find a band, and plan to get them “signed” to cut an album
– so they did this, their tips
– used other kids on campus who built a website for them, a MySpace page, etc.
– if there is not going to be a Movie mogul who ins

they put together a press kit after recording the band
– had a battle of the bands contest
– they would let in Flip cameras, but not the big ones

So this was “Level: Living Inside of Me

Had to do this after school, at the time I didn’t realize how loud drums are

They cut six tracks, made a DVD
– it got in the hands of a movie producer (Chrisopher Nolan), who put it in the trailer for the movie Batman (www.batmanbegins.com)
– Christopher was impressed with the WORK, the content

So the rest of the story…
– full right to a recording/media university program in LA
– he has worked on music for several

this all came out of the planning: we reverse engineered the project

we need to use our networks
– it is about respect, honor, integrity, union, altruism, equality, accept (video showing people’s hands)

Video Marco created about a poem he liked, but outsource the image selections
– set to a Rudyard Kipling poem “If…”

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;
If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
‘ Or walk with Kings – nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And – which is more – you’ll be a Man, my son!

WOW, THIS IS SO POWERFUL. I REALLY WANT TO FIND THE LINK TO THIS VIDEO. MARCO GOT SO MUCH CONTENT FROM THE COLLABORATORS HE MADE 3 VERSIONS OF THIS VIDEO

Narrated by 87 Apple Distinguished Educators in 12 countries

pushcreativity.com
flickschool.com
alasmedia.wikispaces.com

Lots of resources on last two links there for planning process

Conclusion:
– at the inauguration, I was given an award along with others like Linda Darling Hammond, George Lucas, others
– I got fired 4 times from my job for doing the things that I received an award for
– the more I visit Washington DC, the more I realize that there are not people sitting in offices there coming up with solutions, the solutions have to come from US
