It’s amazing to see what creative people can do with music, movies, LEGOs, and a LOT of discretionary time. If you want proof, check out some of the LEGO stopmotion videos included in Mashable’s posts “Top 10 LEGO Movie Tributes on YouTube” and “10 Best LEGO Music Videos on YouTube.” The past two summers I’ve led week long stopmotion moviemaking camps for kids, and those experiences have given me a BIG appreciation for just how much time a good stopmotion scene takes to create. The first sequence below took 440 hours to make, or 18 days! That’s a lot of time. Here are some of my favs from these two posts.

H/T to Yoon Soo Lim for sharing the Best LEGO Music Videos post. I found the LEGO Movie Tributes post after installing and using the Mashable iPhone application today waiting an hour in line for corn dogs at Frontier City. 🙂

It’s amazing how much time it takes to create one of these, but the final product can be amazing. Clearly the creators are highly motivated and engaged by the task or they wouldn’t create one of these labors of love.
In the era of standardized testing, how can we implement projects like this that meet the standards, are cross-curricular, engage the students, and can be completed in limited time in the computer lab or in class? Often these types of projects are relegated to after school clubs. It’s unfortunate.
I think we need to change our entire educational culture to stop focusing myopically on summative assessments. Administrative and political leadership is needed to change this.
From a technical standpoint, every student must have a mobile, digital learning device which permits content creation as well as consumption. That way project work on the computer is not limited to computer lab or class time.
Both of these are tall orders. But I think it’s what we need to do.
Wow those are some amazing logo videos, agree it takes so much time to make one of those that it must be an Art, Thank you Jen
