Strange WordPress, mySQL and other errors
Many, many thanks to Bob Sprankle for guest blogging here the past 3 days! It has been great to rest easy, knowing my blog was in such able hands! It was also a joy to have Bob videoconference into our workshop yesterday (using iChat) briefly, in Goodland, Kansas, to discuss the value of students sharing…

“Upgrading” by Bob Sprankle
Day 3 Guest Blogging at Wes’ by Bob Sprankle Yesterday I picked my daughter up from the neighbor’s to “fetch” her home for dinner. She was playing with the two boys on their lawn, and they had all made these incredible tents and lean-tos. They designed them with natural resources (branches) as well as bandanas…

Ecto 3 Alpha released, not recommended
For the past couple of years I have used the offline blog post composer Ecto, and I have loved it. Since upgrading to WordPress 2.2 as my blogging engine, however, version 2 of Ecto has not functioned for me. I was pleased to learn an alpha version of Ecto 3 is now available, which DOES…

reCAPTCHA, OCR, and the work of blog commenters
I listened to the June NPR Technology report “Turning Verification Codes into Books?” several weeks ago, but not until this evening when I was visiting Bob Sprankle’s Bit by Bit blog did I become a willing worker in the creative reCAPTCHA project. This ingenious project is using the captcha word entries bloggers enter when commenting…

Advice for web 1.0 to 2.0 (WordPress) page conversion?
Geeky but important question: Has anyone had luck batch converting a large number of similar, static webpages into a format that is importable into WordPress? I’m thinking a program like TextWrangler which supports batch grep search and replace commands might work, but that would be a pretty geeky / technical way to do this. Anyone…

Blogging histories
I was interested to hear Will Richardson discuss the number of blog posts he’s written and comments he’s received since he began blogging years ago, in his NECC preso “From Hand It In to Publish It: Re-Envisioning Our Classrooms.” Since I upgraded my WordPress blog engine to version 2.2 yesterday and can now use WordPress…

Thoughts on moderating comments?
I’m curious what others’ current views are on moderating comments on a professional learning blog like this one. Until yesterday, I have not had comment moderation turned on, but for some reason an offensive comment and link got through Akismet and the other anti-blog spam plugins I had activated. This was more troubling than it…

Happy 4th, a new look…
We had a relaxing and outstanding 4th of July in Edmond, Oklahoma! One of the highlights of our local parade this morning was seeing Darth Vader riding a Segway!   Besides enjoying the company of family and friends as well as some good food today, I was thrilled to have time (at last) to update my WordPress…

Blog comment problems here?
Have you had trouble leaving comments on my blog lately? I reconfigured my blog spam plug-ins awhile back, and it has REALLY helped– almost eliminating all blog spam entirely, but it seems comments have been quieter than usual. That may be because people are just not wanting to comment… but I want to make sure…

Blog tools keep getting better
Last night I setup a new podcast blog for a church project on wordpress.com, and I was very pleased with how easy the process was and the new features which are available there for free. Unlike a WordPress blog you host yourself, you can’t upload and install plug-ins to a blog on wordpress.com, but you…
