Assignment: Name 3 21st century skills, identify 2 21st century content areas, list 5 TEKS that address specific 21st century skills and content

Info and Communication skills
– info and media literacy
– communication skills

Thinking and problem solving skills
– these are from the Partnership for 21st Century Skills

NCREL version: Digital age literacy, inventive thinking, effective communication…

Content: global awareness, financial, economic, business and …

According to the Partnership for 21st “The workforce is here, and it is ill-prepared”
– many deficiencies cited in the report

Video clip from Billy Crystal cowboy movie
– are you promoting 21st century learning in your classroom or at your school?

Chris asked a 5th grade student a word problem involving a $4 book he wanted to buy for 8 of his friends
– he did a pre-assessment of repeating multiplication tables for 4’s
– that student had done really well on his statewide math assessment, but he answered this question “$1.19”

How many of your students have contextual learning opportunities, when they can apply learning into real contexts?
– What is missing in action?
— contextual learning, real world applications, higher order thinking, the effective use of learning technologies

Video clip from the incredibles movie, after they parachute out of the aircraft (mom and kids)
– mom traces the smoke trail of the land based missles

Action needed!
– we are not going to die!
– we are not going to panic!
– we will get a grip!
– we need to focus on 21st century learning opportunities that support and promote the TEKS

if we are doing that, children will have contextual learning opportunities that are tied to the TEKS

About LoTi in Texas
– no, you can’t take the LoTi instead of the teacher star chart

video clip of rocky (I think from Rocky III)

LoTi Survey has become the million dollar man!
– it is now “DETAILS for the 21st Century”
– determining
– is available to every educator in the state of Texas
– individual teachers get a report that is a roadmap for professional development

Five empirically-validated constructs
– proficiency in tech use
– student influences on instructional practices
– using technology for complex thinking projects
– locating additional resources or assistance to increase existing technology use
– overcoming barriers to beginning technology use

I am advocating individualized professional development planning for teachers
– we are now talking about connecting

There are still some teachers in Texas at LoTi zero
– TAKS is part of that
– also competing agendas, competing curriculum development areas

Many districts have competing initiatives
– LoTi is a way to capture various initiatives and keep people going in the same direction

How to get started: www.loticonnection.com
– select your state, and take the profile

LoTi is brought to you buy Penta Water for 2005-2006 school year

Other suggestions for curriculum projects
– create signature culminating tasks aligned to the TEKS as part of a pacing guide or scope and sequence chart
– highlight and promote 21st century skills that are already embedded…

Example project involving students conducting a probability study for voter turnout, and then adopting an action plan relating to voter turnout

There are 50 LoTi Project Schools nationwide now

www.loticonnection.com.lpswebsites.html
