Darren Kuropatwa and Sheryl Nusbaum-Beach were interviewed on EdTechTalk this evening for an hour, and provided a midway update for the K12 Online Conference. (A direct link to the mp3 recording of the session is also available.) The part of the discussion I found most interesting focused on how people are “getting to know” others rather intimately by reading their blogs and listening to their podcasts. K12 Online has provided some great opportunities for “live interaction” via the fireside chats, in addition to asynchronous interactions. I am have run into a few people since this summer who have commented on this to me, and it has been interesting… people who are reading my blog and/or listening to my podcast. This summer at the MACE-MTI conference, it was interesting to hear two people comment how “different” I was than what they expected. One had mainly read my blog, the other had just listened to my podcasts. I personally think it is really great to be able to have a virtual window into the mind of someone else via their blog/podcast. The first person whose “mind” I started peering into via his blog was probably Larry Lessig. I have never met or even seen him in person, but he has sure influenced me a great deal through is writings: both print books and in his blog. The potential for influencing others now possible thanks to the Internet and web 2.0 technologies really is amazing.
I was not able to join in on the week2 fireside chat Saturday (due to several presentations at a Dallas-area technology conference, but it sounds like things went well. The format was more structured than it had been for the week1 fireside chat, and apparently that worked better. Lots of people are using the Elluminate environment for the first time, so more structure in that situation is likely better.
Week2 of the conference starts tomorrow!

One response to “Sheryl and Darren on EdTechTalk”
Wes —
You would have been so proud of DK and SNB — they made K12 look so well. There were a lot of positive comments — in fact, if you only listen to the podcast — you will miss 1/2 of the conversation – because you need to read what was going on in the chat room as well.
I have truly enjoyed the K12OC experience……..and honestly, I have only listened to and/or watched only 5 so far. But what I have seen so far, has been such a learning experience — and the best thing is, if I miss a point, I can go back later and rehear/watch it again. At a F2F conference, usually you are stuck with only your notes — which, if they are like mine, are usually scribbled hastily and don’t make sense afterwards. This conference allows you to relive the chat again and again — and (grins) sometimes in the comfy-ness of your pajamas!! (shhh — don’t tell)
But one of the best things about this conference is the people. I am now blessed to call Sheryl, a friend I met on the internet. Grins, she will kill me for this, but her picture presents a feisty kind of gal, and I would probably not have been brave enough to say Hi (grins, I know, I have issues!) 🙂
But through this conference, we have connected and share a love of technology and a love of our Lord, Jesus Christ — and THAT, in itself, is the blessing of K12OC to me.
Hugs to you!
Always a fan!
