Google Planimater (www.acme.com/planimeter) is an incredible tool that lets you calculate real-world areas using Google Maps, for any polygon you desire. It is just unbelievable. I especially like the “hybrid” map view that shows both a satellite and map view of the area you want to measure.
Try it out, measuring the area around your school. Then compare that to the area of other schools, or something else. Lots of instructional possibilities here. Thanks to SJBrooks-Young for this resource lead.
Tim Lauer suggests having students use the free Google Maps Pedometer (www.sueandpaul.com/gmapPedometer) to have students plan their walking routes to and from school. Great ideas, great resources. All free.
