Diversity is a wonderful thing, and so are open source / free software tools that support multiple instant messaging (IM) protocols simultaneously.
Google has made news this week with the release of Google Talk, but it appears to not offer much (yet) in addition to functionality that is already available with other software options. We’ll see.
I have been using Fire for some time to login simultaneously to Yahoo IM, MSN, and AIM– but it seems to bog down and times. I have switched over to Adium, which is based on the open-source Gaim multi-protocol client. Adium is a lot slicker looking and works snappier than Fire, it also supports more functionality (like multi-person chats).
So far so good!
