Stellar idea for using social bookmarks to intro / build community

posted in web 2.0 |

Lucie deLaBruere shared a fantastic idea with me this afternoon about using del.icio.us social bookmarking for helping groups introduce themselves to teach other during teacher professional development workshops. Here are the steps:

  1. Setup a new and unique del.icio.us account for your workshop. Share that userid and password with all participants.
  2. Ask each participant to post a website that describes their educational role, in the title includes the name they want to be known by in the workshop, and in the link description explain how this website describes their professional role(s).
  3. Have participants tag their post “participant.” An example from Lucie’s session today is available.
  4. Have each teacher post a website they consider a “goldmine” (an excellent site.) An example from Lucie’s session is available.

I think these suggestions are great! In a short amount of time, by clicking on each of those tags, everyone in the workshop can see an aggregated list of participant contributions. Then, participants can continue to tag and share resources.

Are there other creative ideas you’ve used or heard about for using social bookmarks in workshops with teachers? I’m looking forward to using these ideas with teachers in 3 day workshops I’m leading in July in August in Oklahoma! :-)

Great idea, and they learn to use del.icio.us while they are at it. Great integration.

Thanks for sharing my strategy. It was the first time I used it and it worked! Don’t you just love it when that happens. I’ll definitely use this again. Sort of like a virtual business card exchange too!
