Moving at the Speed of Creativity by Wesley Fryer

Rise up with Uth TV

Students today need not wait for their school, teachers, or community leaders to recognize the power of digital storytelling and become globally acknowledged filmmakers. The percentage of older adults in my community aware of YouTube seems to be growing but is still quite limited. More youth as well as older learners need to know about Uth TV, in the same way that they need to understand the word “blog” means far more than “MySpace.” According to the Rise Up page of the site:

Uth TV fosters opportunities for young mediamakers to have their authentic voices heard by a vast audience. UthTV.com is an online community for creators of all levels to share original video, audio, image, and word content; Members receive online exposure and critiques from fellow mediamakers. Working with Members, Uth TV also produces original content for television, feature films, online, and other distribution formats.

The site’s teacher resources section contains a variety of films helpful for stimulating student conversation and study on different topics. These are organized by content area, the following are available:

1 Social Studies
2 Identity
3 Immigration
4 Violence
5 Media/Commercialism
6 Government
7 Historical Events
8 Language Arts
9 Health
10 Math

Like YouTube, Uth TV includes a rating system which permits users to collectively identify (via a “The Wisdom of Crowds” method) higher quality submitted videos. Some folks (myself probably included) perceive that on YouTube, a significant percentage of “highly rated” videos seem to have little educational value. Uth TV has a different focus, and therefore a different pattern of submitted content.

This Uth TV promo video gives a good summary of the philosophy and importance of the site and project. I wish Uth TV gave an option to embed media (like YouTube and GoogleVideo do) on ANY blog, but at this point it appears you can only embed flash-based movies to Facebook sites.

I have read and enjoyed The Wisdom of crowds but not heard of the ‘method’. I love this article and as Head of ICT at a British School I see every day the way in which ‘Uth TV’ as a genre is passing many of the older generation by.
